EDUCATION THROUGH JAZZ
At the Boise Jazz Society, we believe jazz education is about far more than music. Jazz teaches creativity, collaboration, listening, discipline, confidence, and self-expression, skills that benefit students both on and off the stage. We also believe that jazz education should belong to everyone, this is why the broader community is invited to participate in our “Informances”.
Jazz is one of America’s greatest art forms, rooted in cultural exchange, innovation, and community. Through exposure to jazz, students learn to think critically, communicate musically, and engage with a living art form that continues to evolve across generations.
Our educational programs are designed to inspire curiosity, support musicians, and make high-quality jazz experiences accessible to audiences of all ages and backgrounds throughout the Treasure Valley in Idaho.

OUR COMMITTMENT
WHY JAZZ EDUCATION MATTERS
Gives Idaho students opportunities to:
Develop creativity through improvisation and musical exploration
Build confidence through performance and collaboration
Strengthen listening, communication, and teamwork skills
Learn the history and cultural significance of jazz music
Connect with professional artists and mentors
Experience music as a lifelong form of expression and community
Studies consistently show that music education supports academic achievement, emotional development, and social connection. Jazz, in particular, encourages students to find their own voice while learning how to contribute meaningfully within a group.

INFORMANCES
Our free Informances combine live performance with interactive education, creating engaging experiences for students and music lovers alike.
These events feature professional touring artists and educators who share insights into their personal journeys, jazz history, improvisation, composition, rhythm, collaboration, and the creative process. Audiences have the opportunity to hear world-class performances while also learning directly from the artists themselves through a Q&A session. They will often wrap up with a jam session, where students can come up and jam with the professionals. Informances are designed to be welcoming and accessible for all, whether someone is hearing jazz for the first time or has studied music for years.
By creating a relaxed and engaging educational environment, Informances help build deeper appreciation and understanding of jazz throughout our community.
Informances take place on the Monday during a visiting artist event. They are free to attend from 4-5:30pm at the Sapphire Room, Boise, Idaho.
